The usual Wednesday suspects are here, with root vegetables, etc. With the continuing cold weather, asparagus isn't expected until the middle of April, so we'll have to content ourselves with greenhouse greens from Bodhitree, Two Guys, and Windfall. Madura has a good variety of mushrooms and Caradonna, Locust Grove, Terhune, Miglorelli, and Breezy Hill have apples and pears as well as cider. Andrew's honey is here and Hot Kitchen, Cayuga, and Our Daily Bread have various breads. Ronnybrook is here with butters, ice creams, yogurts, and cheeses and Three Corner Field Farm has lamb cuts, cheeses, and yogurts (until March 23, their last day for a while). The rose people have roses and anemones and River Garden has two kinds of pussy willow.
Tamarack has pork products and Pura Vida has good looking seafood.

Anna of Dutchmill is Back!! TULIPS!!!! Spring is Definitely Coming Soon!
It's always good to see Anna's beautiful tulips back in the market, and today is her first day! The rest of the market is pretty much the same as it was last Saturday. Locust Grove will have flowering branches in a couple of weeks and Mountain Sweet Berry should have ramps in about three weeks. D'Attolico has young onions and young garlic today.

Will Winter Never End? Stay Tuned!
If desperation drives you to purple-topped turnips, as it seems to have done to New York Magazine this week, you can find good-looking ones at Windfall Farm's stand today, along with a wide variety of microgreens and other greens and turnips. There are actually stands with salad, though, although we're still dependent on greenhouses and hydroponic farmers for lettuces and other greens. Bodhitree has a good variety of braising greens, salad, and pea shoots, as well as tomatoes. Two Guys From Woodbridge and Shushan have hydroponic salad greens and herbs and Shushan has hydroponic tomatoes.
Miglorelli has many kinds of frozen vegetables from their summer harvest and Madura has some greens along with their great variety of mushrooms, popcorn, and eggs. Windfall has their delicious aracuna eggs and squash puree. Rogowski has radishes, young garlic, and scallions. Berried Treasures has their tiny European potatoes and sunchokes.
Terhune, Locust Grove, Caradonna, and Breezy Hill have apples, cider, and pastries. Tamarack Farm has all kinds of pork products and Three Corner Field Farm is here with lamb cuts, yogurts, and cheeses. Ronnybrook has milks, yogurts, butters, and ice cream.
I'm totally addicted to Cayuga's ale bread, which is here along with their whole wheat loaf, grains, beans, and flours. Hot Kitchen is also here with various breads and Beth's Farm Kitchen has great jams and chutneys. I'm having ale bread with Ronnybrook butter and Beth's blueberry jam along with Windfall's eggs (hard boiled) for breakfast. Lovely!

Pretty Much The Same As Last Week
Here we are again, waiting for Spring and the first new green things. Everyone who was in the Greenmarket last Saturday is here again, of course, with better weather. There are whisperings of things to come, but no big news.
My one discovery of the winter is Cayuga's ale bread. It is delicious and addictive and goes well with Ronnybrook's butter, Cato's cheeses, and Shushan's hydroponic tomatoes. All of them are here, along with Terhune, Caradonna, Locust Grove, and Breezy Hill for apples and cider, Paffenroth, Mountain Sweet Berry, and Berried Treasures for root vegetables, Norwich Meadows for greens and root vegetables, and Quattro's, Violet Hill, Flying Pig, and Oak Grove for poultry and pork. Several stands including Northshire, Quattro's, and Violet Hill, have eggs.
Cato Corner, Three Corner Field Farm, and Tonjes have cheeses and Catskill Mountain has lamb and sausages. Two Guys From Woodbridge, Windfall, Shushan, and D'Attolico have various types of salad greens. Mountain Sweet Berry has good looking shallots and Berried Treasures has sunchokes.
The lavender people are here and River Garden has pussy willows and dried flower arrangements. The rose stand has beautiful roses.

Just A Tease!
River Garden has a pile of pussy willow branches today, teasing us with a promise of Spring. We've really got a few weeks to wait, but it's nice to know it is coming! Meanwhile, the brave year-round farmers are here on this sunny (chilly) day, although some of them made it in a little late and were still setting up when I got there.
Terhune, Caradonna, Breezy Hill, and Locust Grove are all here with apples and cider. Miglorelli has apples, cider donuts, and frozen vegetables, as well as jars of tomato puree. Bodhitree has delicious greens, greenhouse tomatoes, kimchee, and root vegetables. Red Jacket is here with ciders and fruit juices and Shushan has hydroponic tomatoes, herbs, and greens. Two Guys From Woodbridge has hydroponic salad and herbs. Windfall has greenhouse greens, root vegetables, and squash puree.
Three Corner Field Farm will be here until the end of March, with yogurts, lamb cuts, and cheeses, and then will return in May. Tamarack has pork cuts and the ostrich meat people are here with various cuts of ostrich. Andrew's Honey and Beth's Farm Kitchen are here and Pura Vida has fresh fish. Hot Bread Kitchen, Cayuga, and Our Daily Bread have delicious breads, and Cayuga has wonderful flours, grains, and beans. (Try Cayuga's tasty ale bread!) For a great fresh scent, try Lavender By The Bay's lavender products.

Cold Wind A'Blowin'
Just as I suspected, the warmth of yesterday has disappeared, blown out by a strong cold wind. It looks the same -- sunny, relatively cloudless -- but it is pretty cold out. When I was a kid, I would have brought out my "Spring coat" and lived to regret it. However, there is some good news, if only for the future. Oak Grove Plantation will be bringing in their terrific tiny mesclun in around three weeks -- one of the first two early signs of spring, the other being baby field spinach. Actually, D'Attolico had a bit of young garlic this morning! Norwich has some good looking spinach today (greenhouse? I didn't ask), so things are looking up.
Terhune has generous bargain bags of apples today, along with cider, apples, and pastries. Quattro's has good looking duck breasts along with chickens, ducks, pheasant sausages, soups, and their excellent chicken pot pies. Mountain Sweet Berry's stand is on the 17th Street part of the market again today, with tiny potatoes and shallots, and Hudson Valley Duck Farm is in Rick's usual location near the uptown west entrance of the subway. Miglorelli has frozen vegetables, apples, and cider donuts.
Cayuga has their delicious ale bread and Ronnybrook is strategically located next to them with wonderful butters. Tremblay honey is close by as well and Cato Corner Farm cheeses are available right across the way. Shushan's basil, tomatoes, and lettuces are fairly close as well. I think I've got my lunch for today!
Oak Grove is here with sugar pumpkins, squashes, dried hot peppers, terrific pork products, and colorful popping corn. They've brought in some herb plants, too. Hudson Valley Duck Farm has a new product, duck sausage ragu, which looks terrific. Northshire has eggs, honey, and vegetables and Violet Hill has excellent looking lamb cuts, fresh cut pork, Belle Rouge chickens and chicken parts, and eggs, and is having a lamb and pork sale. Paffenroth has many kinds of root vegetable at very reasonable prices. Milk Thistle is here with milks and Tonjes has buttermilk, cheeses, and yogurts. Bulich has several kinds of mushroom and Berried Treasures is here with potatoes and sunchokes.

Faux Spring!!
It is one of those times that occur in November and February when the sun is out and the temperature is temperate and we all get fooled and end up wearing either too much or too little. The beautiful sunny morning at 8 AM has become cloudy, though, and it's hard to decide what to do. When I was in the greenmarket at 8:30, the vegetables, root and sparsely green as they were, were still bright and beautiful. Now, at 9:30, I wonder. At least the sun was out for my pictures!
Hammond Dairy has tasty yogurts, flavored and plain. I tasted the peach, which was very good. Red Jacket is here with juices and Muddy River has carrots, celeriac, squashes, potatoes, and spinach. Samascott has all kinds of apples, potatoes, and various fruit items, as well as grass fed beef. Norwich has good looking greens and root vegetables. Deep Woods maple syrup and Tremblay Honey are here and Tree-Licious Orchards has apples and pastries. Beth's Farm Kitchen has luscious jams and chutneys (my current favorites are raspberry, black currant, and blueberry). Bobolink Dairy has delicious cheddar-style and other cheeses.
Pura Vida has excellent fresh fish and shellfish. Flying Pig has bacon, pork roasts, and eggs. Miglorelli has frozen vegetables (corn, collards, tomatoes, etc.), apples, and other produce. Madura has several kinds of good looking mushrooms and the ostrich meat stand is here as well. Two Guys From Woodbridge have hydroponic lettuces and herbs. Cayuga has lovely ale bread and whole wheat loaves as well as beans, grains, and flours. John Fazio has ducks, rabbits, and other poultry. And last, but not least, Bodhitree has tasty looking greens, peppers, and root vegetables.
