Raspberries! Strawberries! Winter and Summer Squashes! Eggplants!! Mushrooms!

Bulich, Honey Hollow, and Madura are here with many kinds of mushroom. Eckerton and Bodhitree have delicious heirloom sweet potatoes and tomatoes. Paffenroth has all kinds of carrots, potatoes, beets, kales, and other unique produce. Mountain Sweet Berry and Cherry Lane have outstanding sauce tomatoes and Stokes, Cherry Lane, Eckerton, Oak Grove, Bodhitree, Keith, and Berried Treasures have tasty heirloom tomatoes. Oak Grove and Eckerton have wide selections of hot peppers and Sycanore has beautiful sweet peppers. Sycamore and Van Houton have cauliflower and Mountain Sweet Berry, Berried Treasures, and Paffenroth have a fine selection of European style small potatoes and other varieties.

Miglorelli and Sycamore have corn and Miglorelli, Oak Grove, Bodhitree, and others have many kinds of melon. Paffenroth, Stokes, S&SO, Keith, and others have generous bunches of cut herbs. Locust Grove, Terhune, and Breezy Hill have apples, pears, and cider. Eckerton has CHESTNUTS. Berried Treasures and Windfall have good-looking squash blossoms. Mountain Sweet Berry has haricots verts, lamborn pea shoots, wild arugula, Tri-star strawberries, and tiny potatoes. Cherry Lane, Bodhitree, and others have many varieties of eggplant. Cherry Lane has baby artichokes. Oak Grove has husk tomatoes and tomatillos. Bodhitree has unique flavoring peppers and interesting radishes, including watermelon radishes (pink on the inside) and a large Korean variety.

Grapes and Grape Juice! Fall Raspberries! Tomatillos! Heirloom Tomatoes Still Good But the Chill Will Come Soon! Beautiful Peppers!!

Sorry to be so late, but so it goes! Fantasy Fruit says this is their last week for the market and their blueberries. Locust Grove has apples, pears, heirloom tomatoes, quinces,and grapes. Red Jacket has SWEET FALL RASPBERRIES!! Buzzard Crest has delicious grapes and grape juices. Nemeth Orchard has baked goods and apples. Eckerton has okra, heirloom tomatoes, and is in the height of their pepper season! Oak Grove also has excellent peppers, in addition to tomatillos, all kinds of wonderful squashes, heirloom tomatoes, summer squashes, and corn. Hoeffner has cranberry beans, broccoli, string beans, peppers, and other produce. S&SO has their great selection of salad and other vegetables, in addition to their economically priced baby vegetables and tiny hot peppers.

Cheerful Cherry has several tomato varieties as well as grapes and jams. Beth's Farm Kitchen has a wide selection of jams, jellies, chutneys, pickled vegetables, and gifts. Cherry Lane has lima beans, corn, heirloom and field tomatoes, eggplants, and other tasty items. Paffenroth is here with many unusual vegetables, delicious potato varieties, many kinds of beets, carrots, onion family items, and herbs. Sycamore has corn, peppers, field tomatoes, and string beans and will have heirloom tomatoes again soon.

It makes a huge difference in the quality of your bread if the flour it is made from is local. Cayuga has several types of flours, grains, and beans, in addition to excellent whole wheat bread. I like to use Ronnybrook's excellent butter or Beth's succulent jams on their bread. Violet Hill has good-looking Belle Rouge chickens and interesting mushrooms. Mountain Sweet Berry has wild arugula, sucrine lettuce, wonderful sauce tomatoes, Spigarelli broccoli, Lamborne pea shoots,and tiny potatoes. Breezy Hill has crab apples, pears, various apples, and pastry. Windfall has edible flowers, many micro and other greens, and squashes.

Keith has organic heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and other tasty produce. Stokes has heirloom tomatoes, a wide variety of herbs, garlic, squashes, lemon grass, and peppers. Norwich Meadows Farm has heirloom tomatoes, peppers, squashes, eggplants, beans, and greens.

Pumpkins, Apples, Pears (But also raspberries and Tri-Star Strawberries!!)

Kernan has tomatoes, squashes, and okra, and still has nectarines and peaches. Honey Hollow has interesting mushrooms, including Mitake, chicken of the woods, oysters, saffron caps, and others. S&SO has great lettuces, boxes of small squashes and other small vegetables, as well as bok choi, herbs, and salad vegetables. Eckerton has chestnuts, all kinds of hot peppers and flavoring peppers, heirloom tomatoes, and many varieties of cherry tomato as well as two kinds of okra. Keith has several kinds of heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, cut herbs, garlic, onions, and other organic produce.

River Garden has gorgeous country flowers. Andrew's Honey is here with honey products and Mountain Sweet Berry has sucrine lettuce, excellent sauce tomatoes, Tri-Star strawberries, tiny potatoes, wild arugula, spigarello broccoli, and haricots verts and jaunes. Cherry Lane has heirloom tomatoes, peppers, san marzano sauce tomatoes, corn, and lima beans. Sycamore has peppers, heirloom tomatoes, cauliflower, and field tomatoes. Two Guys has beautiful lettuce bunches.

Bodhitree has flavoring peppers, eggplants, string beans, greens, sweet peppers, squashes, and other delicious produce. Miglorelli has watermelons and other kinds of melon. Paffenroth has several unique vegetables, including purslane, many kinds of carrots and beets, baby fennel, radicchio, and several varieties of autumn squash. Stokes has heirloom tomatoes, generous bunches of cut herbs, and other tasty produce.

Heirloom Tomatoes!! Squashes!! Beans!! Plums!! Apples!! Pears!! Grapes!!

I have been enjoying heirloom tomatoes from many farms this summer, and they're still going strong! Eckerton, Keith, Stokes, Oak Grove, Sycamore,Berried Treasures, Bodhitree,and others have wonderful heirlooms. I had a terrific heirloom cherry tomato soup at The Modern Dining Room on Monday, including several different varieties and flavors, selected at the Greenmarket.

Several stands have excellent beans, squashes, and eggplants, and the new crop of squashes, large and small, has come in at Oak Grove's stand. Keith and others have good looking pumpkins and Oak Grove and Madura have mini pumpkins. Bodhitree has long beans and other beautiful beans and Berried Treasures has unique shelling beans, and tiny potatoes. Bodhitree has unusual flavoring peppers and Oak Grove and Eckerton have great hot and sweet peppers.

Fantasy Fruit is here with blueberries and will probably be here on Saturday, but that may be it for the season.

Grapes!! Heirloom Tomatoes!! Hot Peppers!! Baby Artichokes!! Melons!! Squashes!! Beans!!

First of all, I want to thank the farmers and other Greenmarket people who showed up at Union Square the week after September 11, 2001. It was the first sign of normalcy for me and others and was so comforting!!

If you like to put up pesto for the freezer, now's the time to do it, before it goes to seed. Sycamore, Cherry Lane, Northshire, and Stokes have great basil right now. If you want
to have tomatoes for the winter, try using San Marzanos and other plum and heirloom Italian tomatoes from Mountain Sweet Berry, Cheerful Cherry, D'Attolico, Norwich Meadows, Stokes, Eckerton, and others.

Peak was two weeks ago. Just saying...

I just picked up several pounds of Cheerful Cherry's Polish plum tomatoes and will be making sauce for the freezer this weekend. I'm having the last of their yellow peaches also. I have some beautiful heirloom tomatoes from Norwich Meadow for salad -- grabbing the moment. They still have good looking tomatoes, but it will be downhill from now on, at least in terms of numbers. Other people with tomatoes today -- Bodhitree, Oak Grove, Sycamore. If you do plan to freeze tomatoes or sauce, now is the time!

Norwich has excellent raspberries and Berried Treasures has great Tri-Star strawberries and raspberries. Muddy River has big bunches of fresh herbs, salad greens, and broccoli.Bodhitree has their unique Japanese peppers, eggplants, long beans, edemame, salad greens, and herbs. Red Jacket has sweet yellow plums and Cheerful Cherry has dark purple Italian plums for pies.

John Fazio has fresh chickens, rabbits, and ducks. Lavender by the Bay and the Ostrich farm is here and Cayuga is here with beans, flours, and bread. Madura is here with several kinds of mushroom. Flying Pig has fresh chickens.

Pumpkins and Grapes!! Last weeks of summer.

For all I know, there may have been pumpkins before today, but I didn't see them. Couldn't miss them today, though. Get your peaches while you can -- some stands are already finished with them. You can still get them from Caradonna, Oak Grove, and Kernan. There are still plenty of plums, including Red Jacket's good looking yellow variety, and Locust Grove still has nectarines and some plums as well as this fall's Devoe pears and apples. Several stands have watermelon and other melons.

Eckerton, Locust Grove, Sycamore, Keith, Cherry Lane, Oak Grove, Stokes, and Bodhitree have plenty of heirloom tomatoes, and Mountain Sweet Berry has their excellent sauce tomatoes. Max Creek Hatchery has gorgeous wild watercress and Berried Treasures has beautiful beans, wild watercress, zucchini blossoms, squashes, and other tasty vegetables and herbs as well as tiny wild blueberries, red and golden raspberries, and Tri-Star strawberries. Mountain Sweet Berry has Tri-stars, wild baby arugula, tiny potatoes, and spiglarello broccoli. Sycamore has beautiful sweet red peppers and Eckerton and Oak Grove have a wide variety of hot peppers. Paffenroth and Miglorelli are here with great produce and S&SO has their salad vegetables, mini vegetables, and boxes of onions and peppers.

Andrews Honey is here, as well as Beth's Jam, Cayuga (bread, flours, beans), and Hot Kitchen (breads, rolls, and other baked goods).

Irregular Posting on Mondays and Fridays

Happy Labor Day!! I'm not going to the market until this afternoon,
but I'm sure most stands will be there, including Lani, Norwich Meadows, Dutch Mill, Maxwell, and Phillips.Hudson Valley Duck Farm and Consider Bardwell cheese
should be there as well, unless they've taken off for the holiday.

I'll be posting rarely on Mondays and Fridays for the Fall, since I'm going back to school.

Grapes, Apples, Pears, Plums, Peaches!! Lot's of Okra and Corn!

Cheerful Cherry has the last of their excellent peaches today. They also have many kinds of cherry tomato and some other tomatoes, and will have more next week. Jim is making his own Serrano pepper preserves, which I'm going to try today. Locust Grove has peaches, nectarines, and good-looking apples and pears. Eckerton has many delicious hot peppers and heirloom tomatoes as well as raspberries and a couple of kinds of okra. Fantasy Fruit is here with blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and grapes. (Speaking of strawberries, Mountain Sweet Berry seems to have taken the holiday weekend off and isn't here today.) Buzzard Crest has grapes and grape juices.

Several stands have melons, including Hoeffner, Oak Grove, Norwich Meadows, and Cherry Lane Farm. There's plenty of corn at Paffenroth, Sycamore, Cherry Lane, Oak Grove, and other stands and squashes and squash blossoms at Windfall Farm's stand. Windfall also has other edible flowers, mesclun, various greens, and baby squashes. Cherry Lane has a lot of okra, fairytale eggplant, and tomatoes. Gorzynski has beautiful lettuce and other organic produce. Northshire has lovely Genovese basil, cress, eggplant, and heirloom tomatoes. D'Attolico has excellent squashes, greens, sprouts, beans, and shallots. Keith has tomatoes, greens, garlic, and cut herbs. Norwich has a wide variety of beans, peppers, greens, and heirloom tomatoes.

Dutch Mill Garden is here with gorgeous gladiolas and other flowers and says they will probably have some lyciantus next Saturday!! (Get there early!) River Garden has bouquets of wildflowers. Binder is here with wonderful flowering potted plants and lush herb plants.

Three Corner Field Farm has lamb cuts, yogurt, cheeses, and wool. Quattro's has chicken parts, all sorts of poultry including pheasant, pheasant sausage, and eggs. Violet Hill is here with Belle Rouge chickens and mushrooms.

Took the morning off for a great breakfast at Maialino, but...

Picked up some great peaches from Cheerful Cherry (their last weekend for peaches), mixed shelling beans from Berried Treasures, and a sweet green tomato from Norwich Meadows. Next week will be my last week for doing the Monday and Friday Greenmarket reports, since I'm going back to school! I'll still be doing Wednesday and Saturday regularly and will do the other days if I manage to get up *really* early on and off.

Honey Hollow's Unusual Mushrooms! Bodhitree's Luscious Watermelons!! Berried Treasures Unique Shelling Beans!

Look carefully and you will see that there are good but fewer heirloom tomatoes, good and plentiful squashes and eggplants, and all sorts of tasty peppers. There are more grapes and fewer peaches. There are some berries and many kinds of plum, but the mounting boxes of grapes are an indication that we'd better enjoy summer vegetables now while we can!

Madura and Honey Hollow have delicious mushrooms, Bodhitree has tasty and interesting peppers, including Japanese flavorful varieties. Locust Grove has good looking peaches and plums and have new crop apples and pears. Fantasy Fruit has blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Mountain Sweet Berry and Berried Treasures have Tri-star strawberries. Berried Treasures has many kinds of shelling beans, including Perignon, cranberry, pink butterbeans, Jacob's Cattle, flageolet, and cannelini.

S&SO, Paffenroth, and Miglorelli have a wide variety of produce, including salad and other greens, many kinds of carrots, onion family, and other root vegetables. Stokes, Oak Grove, Sycamore, Cherry Lane, and Keith have heirloom tomatoes (get them while you can!).
