First of all, I want to thank the farmers and other Greenmarket people who showed up at Union Square the week after September 11, 2001. It was the first sign of normalcy for me and others and was so comforting!!

If you like to put up pesto for the freezer, now's the time to do it, before it goes to seed. Sycamore, Cherry Lane, Northshire, and Stokes have great basil right now. If you want

Peak was two weeks ago. Just saying...

I just picked up several pounds of Cheerful Cherry's Polish plum tomatoes and will be making sauce for the freezer this weekend. I'm having the last of their yellow peaches also. I have some beautiful heirloom tomatoes from Norwich Meadow for salad -- grabbing the moment. They still have good looking tomatoes, but it will be downhill from now on, at least in terms of numbers. Other people with tomatoes today -- Bodhitree, Oak Grove, Sycamore. If you do plan to freeze tomatoes or sauce, now is the time!

Norwich has excellent raspberries and Berried Treasures has great Tri-Star strawberries and raspberries. Muddy River has big bunches of fresh herbs, salad greens, and broccoli.Bodhitree has their unique Japanese peppers, eggplants, long beans, edemame, salad greens, and herbs. Red Jacket has sweet yellow plums and Cheerful Cherry has dark purple Italian plums for pies.

John Fazio has fresh chickens, rabbits, and ducks. Lavender by the Bay and the Ostrich farm is here and Cayuga is here with beans, flours, and bread. Madura is here with several kinds of mushroom. Flying Pig has fresh chickens.

Pumpkins and Grapes!! Last weeks of summer.

For all I know, there may have been pumpkins before today, but I didn't see them. Couldn't miss them today, though. Get your peaches while you can -- some stands are already finished with them. You can still get them from Caradonna, Oak Grove, and Kernan. There are still plenty of plums, including Red Jacket's good looking yellow variety, and Locust Grove still has nectarines and some plums as well as this fall's Devoe pears and apples. Several stands have watermelon and other melons.

Eckerton, Locust Grove, Sycamore, Keith, Cherry Lane, Oak Grove, Stokes, and Bodhitree have plenty of heirloom tomatoes, and Mountain Sweet Berry has their excellent sauce tomatoes. Max Creek Hatchery has gorgeous wild watercress and Berried Treasures has beautiful beans, wild watercress, zucchini blossoms, squashes, and other tasty vegetables and herbs as well as tiny wild blueberries, red and golden raspberries, and Tri-Star strawberries. Mountain Sweet Berry has Tri-stars, wild baby arugula, tiny potatoes, and spiglarello broccoli. Sycamore has beautiful sweet red peppers and Eckerton and Oak Grove have a wide variety of hot peppers. Paffenroth and Miglorelli are here with great produce and S&SO has their salad vegetables, mini vegetables, and boxes of onions and peppers.

Andrews Honey is here, as well as Beth's Jam, Cayuga (bread, flours, beans), and Hot Kitchen (breads, rolls, and other baked goods).

Irregular Posting on Mondays and Fridays

Happy Labor Day!! I'm not going to the market until this afternoon,
but I'm sure most stands will be there, including Lani, Norwich Meadows, Dutch Mill, Maxwell, and Phillips.Hudson Valley Duck Farm and Consider Bardwell cheese
should be there as well, unless they've taken off for the holiday.

I'll be posting rarely on Mondays and Fridays for the Fall, since I'm going back to school.

Eckerton has many delicious hot peppers and heirloom tomatoes as well as raspberries and a couple of kinds of okra. Fantasy Fruit is here with blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and grapes. Several stands have melons, including Hoeffner, Oak Grove, Norwich Meadows, and Cherry Lane Farm. There's plenty of corn at Paffenroth, Sycamore, Cherry Lane, Oak Grove, and other stands and squashes and squash blossoms at Windfall Farm's stand. Windfall also has other edible flowers, mesclun, various greens, and baby squashes. Cherry Lane has a lot of okra, fairytale eggplant, and tomatoes. Took the morning off for a great breakfast at Maialino, but...

Picked up some great peaches from Cheerful Cherry (their last weekend for peaches), mixed shelling beans from Berried Treasures, and a sweet green tomato from Norwich Meadows. Next week will be my last week for doing the Monday and Friday Greenmarket reports, since I'm going back to school! I'll still be doing Wednesday and Saturday regularly and will do the other days if I manage to get up *really* early on and off.
