WHAT???? ARE THEY KIDDING???? NO HEATERS???

Whether the ruling came from the Fire Department or the Parks Department, it makes no sense to tell the farmers the day before a snowstorm that they can't have heaters at their stands.  It's not clear whose idea this was, but the result is that you won't be able to buy your leafy vegetables from many of your favorite farmers because they won't be here!  Many stands come from places it's difficult to travel from, so it isn't surprising that they aren't here today,  but others are not here simply because this ruling results in the destruction of their produce.

Considering the humane roots of the farmers' markets and the intention to support local production, it is amazing to me that this has happened. Perhaps the people in charge are unaware of the history of the market and the fact that the Union Square Greenmarket essentially *made* the area the thriving business area it is today by attracting so many people.

Anyhow, it seems crazy to me that after 25 or so years of fire-free heating during the winter markets a ruling should be handed down with no time for planning.
------------------------------------
Meanwhile, several stands *are* here and you can find poultry, pork, eggs, apples, cranberries, leeks, and other great produce. No flowers, of course, and very few greens, but you should be able to satisfy your evergreen cravings.  I didn't see any pointsettia plants (they need warmth, too).

Where's Lucy???

Just in case you were wondering what happened to the Report, the "bug" that's been going around decided to stop off at my house and I've been having a bout of the "flu", or whatever it is. I expect to be back in business soon, maybe Friday.

Meanwhile, enjoy the Greenmarket and have a glass of Ronnybrook's superb eggnog!!!
