Strawberries

If you want strawberries from Sycamore, you will find them in the Market today in the usual spot. They are delicious, as are Stokes's and Samascott's. Berried Treasures has tasty Tri-Stars. Sycamore also has sweet sugar snaps and greenhouse tomatoes. Muddy River, a comparatively new farm stand on the East end of the Market, has beautiful produce, and a farm new today, Esopus Creek Farm, had good looking salad.Tello is here with aracuna eggs.

Cheerful Cherry has great succulent plants and Oak Grove has excellent windowsill herb gardens. Newfield Farm has lovely wildflowers.

STRAWBERRIES! CHERVIL! LUP[NS!

It's strawberry heaven today in the Greenmarket! Sycamore has fabulous berries, with many other farmers having good looking strawberries as well. Stokes has their delicious variety and Berried Treasures has the first of their Tri-Stars. Sugar snap peas are available at many stands as well. I tried one of Ted Blew's ample supply and it was sweet and flavorful. Evolution, Paffenroth, and other farmers have lovely produce. Mountain Sweet Berry has tasty wild baby arugula, young garlic, sucrine lettuce, and CHERVIL! Sycamore has crisp "burpless" cucumbers and greenhouse tomatoes. Cherry Lane has asparagus, spinach, and greenhouse heirloom tomatoes.

Tim Faoro of Flora Perfecta has exquisite peach-colored lilies, purple lilies, and other flowers. River Garden has beautiful wildflowers and grasses. Berried Treasures has lupins!

Albany, N.Y. -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker on Tuesday told consumers that New York grown tomatoes are safe to consume, and they have not been linked to the recent salmonella outbreak in raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed this information and expanded its list of production areas not associated with the outbreak to include New York.

It's Too Darned Hot, But Farmers Are Here!!!!

It may be horribly hot, but the farmers are here with beautiful produce. Madura's variety of produce is widening, Yuno has beautiful greens, herbs, asparagus, and strawberries, and Race is here with baked goods, vegetables, and plants. Scarborough has potted herbs and Newfield has lovely wildflowers and lilies.

Norwich Farm and Sycamore are back!!!

Get to the Greenmarket as early as you can today! The weather will be hard on the produce and today's offerings are so good it's a shame to let that happen! Sycamore is back! They have lovely strawberries and greenhouse tomatoes. Norwich Farm is back! Their greens are as terrific as ever. Stokes Farm has wonderful strawberries as well as tasty cherry tomatoes and Mountain Sweet Berry has CHERVIL!!! D'Attolico has gorgeous cilantro and oregano as well as tasty greens and sprouts. Cherry Lane has beautiful asparagus and strawberries.

Durr has beautiful wildflowers and other farmers have some peonies. The season is definitely changing.

Delicious new cheese stand!

I'm eating delicious cheese from Dancing Ewe on whole wheat levain from Our Daily Bread. I saw a new bakery, Wild Hive, on the 17th Street end of the West side of the Greenmarket, with a selection of what looks like tasty multigrain breads and pastries, but I haven't tried them yet. I missed some good looking strawberries at Stokes Farm, but got some at Yuno's stand. Dancing Ewe also has cow and sheep ricottas, both of which are delicious. The cow version is mild and the sheep has a richer flavor.

I was happy to see that there are still peonies in the market! Blew, Newfield, Cheerful Cherry, and others have them and other flowers as well. Berried Treasures said that they will have peonies later on, too!

Evolution is here with a wide variety of delicious greens and plants. Cherry Lane has strawberries, sugar snap peas, and shell peas, along with spinach and asparagus. Stokes Farm has BLACK PEPPERMINT, other cut herbs,strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and plants. Windfall Farm has great greenhouse greens and several varieties of edible flower. Keith is here with young rocambole garlic and herbs. Honey Hollow Farm has fresh ANGELICA!

River Garden has wildflowers and Berried Treasures has lupins as well as stinging nettles, wild watercress, and other goodies.

Lobsters and Scallops!!

The fish people are offering a lobster special -- one steamed lobster for $12 or two for $22. They also have tasty looking scallops and other seafood. Yuno's strawberries are delicious today. They also have good looking young garlic, thin and beautiful asparagus, and purselane. Tello is here with great eggs and Maxwell has strawberries, herbs, rhubarb, and other produce.
Newfield Farm has the last of her lovely peonies, as well as bachelor buttons and sweet william in many colors.

June 2, 2008 Excavation at the Site to Be Short-Lived This Week's Construction Update Padilla Construction Services (PCS), the general contractor, began excavating rock from beneath the former east playground in order both to expand the play area and to create space for public restroom facilities in that location. The rock excavation is slated to last only through the end of this week, when the site should be fully excavated. Future work that may require some jack hammering or other loud activity includes utility trenching, and demolition of the Pavilion's concrete floor. The latter is necessary in order to stabilize and restore the structural foundation of the building. This work should also be completed within the next 1 - 2 weeks. In addition to excavation and demolition work, PCS has salvaged much of the existing building materials for reuse once the Pavilion has been refurbished and playground expanded. The clay roof tiles, original to the building, are being saved for reuse, as are the granite stones from the retaining wall. When the work is complete, the stone will once again encircle and protect the playground, as well as form part of the façade material for the new public restroom building. Other site work completed this week includes pouring the concrete tree insulation wall, backfilling the tree pit trench with soil, and beginning installation of the site's storm drainage system. New Feature: Question of the Week Question: "I heard that the [North End] project includes adding two new lanes of traffic along 17th Street, is this true?" - 15th Street Resident Answer: No. In fact, prior to the finalization of the North End construction plans, the Parks Department and the Union Square Partnership asked the Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct a study to determine if we could eliminate roadway to give back to the park. The DOT study found that we could transfer 5 feet from the roadway to the plaza along the entire stretch of 17th Street, which will increase plaza space. Additionally, plans include the removal of all Muni-meter parking along the west side of the park, which will create even more park land space for pedestrian and Greenmarket use. When work on the north plaza is complete, there will be no reduction of plaza space for the Greenmarket and they will return to the north end.
