What I Bought Today and Other Beautiful Produce

I love Hudson Valley Duck Farm's Rillettes, so I bought some to replace the succulent appetizer I bought on Wednesday.  I stopped at Stokes and picked up some red jacket small potatoes with rosemary and mixed bunches of cut herbs (they were so good in my capon -- I'm going to have them with a chicken next Saturday). Ronnybrook didn't forget their terrific garlic butter today, so I bought some to store for Christmas.

REALLY?? THEY CAN'T FIND ANOTHER PARKING LOT FOR THE TRUCKS?

I was shocked to hear that the Christmas market will open next week but that the Farmers may still be displaced to Madison Square. Surely now that it is colder the trucks could be moved to school yards like the one on Greenwich Ave for PS 41 or the one in the 20's on Second Avenue.  The people who came to help us are wonderful, but the farmers who came to Union Square the week after 9/11 were and are wonderful too.  Anyone with a memory bigger than that of a gnat will remember that during a horrific time after the terror attack these people came, fed New Yorkers (some, like Windfall, for free), and gave us our courage back just by struggling into the city and giving us a feeling of normalcy. They're doing it again today!!!

Paffenroth has pumpkins! You know what THAT means!! Berried Treasures has shelling beans!!

Grapes and pumpkins, fewer stands with peaches, several stands with winter squash! You know the season is changing. There are plenty of heirloom and other tomatoes in the market, but it's really time to think about (and proceed to) canning or freezing for the winter. Corn also is nearing an end  point, although there are still several stands with good ears.  Another sign of change is the number of stands with hot and sweet peppers -- you can freeze some varieties for the winter. I also scrape a few ears of corn for freezing.

I know what I'm going to be doing!  San Marzano tomatoes from Cherry Lane, Polish and other large plum tomatoes from Stokes, Bodhitree, and Cheerful Cherry(on Friday and Saturday), orange Thai hot peppers and Trinidadian flavoring peppers from Eckerton for the freezer, shelling beans from Berried Treasures for the freezer, and cut herbs from Stokes and SandSO to dry.

In addition to these two stands, some others with great ones are Stokes, Keith, Cherry Lane, Lani, and Cheerful Cherry.

There are still several stands with peaches, including Oak Grove, Locust Grove, and Caradonna.  Excellent beans can be found at Norwich Meadows, Mountain Sweet Berry, S&SO, Lani, and others. Both Norwich Meadows and Lani have interesting Asian pepper varieties, and okra.

Signs of Change

Two clues that indicate that it is time to start making sauce for the freezer  -- tomato, pesto, pepper -- are the arrival of Buzzard Crest grapes and grape juices and the start of autumn squashes.  I've already done a batch of San Marzano tomatoes (from Cherry Lane) and am planning another of those and a batch of heirloom tomatoes. I'll be making pesto base in ice cube trays as well.  I'll get heirlooms from Eckerton, Cherry Lane, Stokes, Keith, and other stands with tasty varieties.

Several stands are into their pepper season. Today Oak Grove has a terrific selection and other stands like Tamarack, Rogowski, S&SO, and Bodhitree have interesting varieties as well.

Mountain Sweet Berry and Berried Treasures have Tri-Star strawberries and Fantasy Fruit has blueberries and strawberries. Terhune has good-looking peaches, although the peach season is just about over. I'd take the opportunity to can them while they are still sweet.

Windfall has their excellent fresh zucchini blossoms as well as many sizes of summer squash. I am planning to fill some with fresh goat cheese and saute them to go with roast chicken. I'll be serving Hudson Valley Duck Rillettes on crackers before that.
