A Surprisingly Balmy Day in the Greenmarket!
You will find most of your favorite Wednesday stands here today AND next Wednesday, but you may have to search among the stands from other market days which will be here on the day before Thanksgiving. The Christmas crafts market is being built as we speak, which means that several stands are already in different places from their usual spots. Bulich Mushrooms has moved about a block up from their usual and Locust Grove is also up a couple of blocks. Cherry Lane is in their usual Wednesday spot today with brussels sprouts, arugula, broccoli, and sweet potatoes, but you may have to hunt for them next week. Sycamore is NOT here today. Kernan is in their spot.
Stokes Farm is here today with great bunches of cut herbs, including their mixed bunch for poultry -- sage, rosemary, and thyme. Eckerton has cardoons, heirloom tomatoes, brussels sprouts on branches, hot peppers of many sorts, including bunches on branches. Keith has braising greens, herbs, Rocambole garlic, and salad greens. Berried Treasures has all sorts of cherry tomatoes, potatoes, and sunchokes. Beth's Jam is here with various cranberry items, including sauce and chutney, as well as all sorts of preserves wrapped for gifts. Another stand for gifts, Andrews Honey has many honeys, soaps, and honey combs. Rose Meadow has beautiful roses, floral kale, and other flowers.
Windfall is here with all sorts of mini to maxi salad items. S&SO, Paffenroth, Stokes, and others have many kinds of lettuces and other salad vegetables. Kernan has string beans, broccoli, and other vegetables. Two Guys have various salads and herbs. Hodgson has a number of varieties of cauliflower and broccoli and brussels sprouts.

Cranberry Jam, Cranberry Sauce, Cranberry Chutney, Raspycran Jam! Beth's Jam has 'em all and more!
Most Greenmarket stands will be here on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Quattro's is taking orders for poultry and pheasant sausage for stuffing to be picked up either the Saturday before or the Wednesday before the holiday. Sycamore will be here with brussels sprouts the Friday before the holiday and other stands with brussels sprouts, cauliflower, field tomatoes, squashes, pumpkins, etc. will be here on the Wednesday before as well, including Paffenroth, Cherry Lane, S&SO, Stokes, and others. Stokes will have their excellent mixed herb bunches for poultry.
Locust Grove has excellent looking quinces today as well as a wide selection of apples and pears. Oak Grove has gorgeous peppers, tomatoes, and squashes and will take orders for holiday pies either here or on Whatisfresh.com. Stokes has excellent small potatoes, string beans, cucumbers, cauliflowers, cut herbs, and fresh herb wreaths for gifts. Van Houton has good looking brussels sprouts and various cauliflowers today.
I was happy to find Ronnybrook's knockout Ginger Creme Brulee ice cream here today. Others obviously know about it, because everyone at the stand was asking for it!!

Cardoons! Winter Squashes!! Brussels Sprouts!! Mustard Greens!! Sweet Potatoes!! Last of the Crosnes!!!
Well, the recessional continues, with crosnes (from Mountain Sweet Berry) disappearing after this week and the few heirloom tomatoes looking like candidates for Fried Green Tomatoes. Sycamore will continue to have field and greenhouse tomatoes for a couple of weeks and Shushan's hydroponic variety is looking pretty good, but Thanksgiving will probably see many farmers finishing for the year. The Grenada flavoring peppers so popular with Caribbean cooks is gone from Eckerton's table (although they do have cardoons!). Eckerton, Oak Grove, and others have interesting winter squashes -- some good for pies, others for soups and stews.
There are plenty of holiday offerings, including all kinds of large and small potatoes (Mountain Sweet Berry, Berried Treasures, Paffenroth), many varieties of cauliflower (Bodhitree, Hodgeson, and others), braising greens, and carrots (Paffenroth). Eckerton and Oak Grove have many kinds of hot and flavoring peppers and have distinctly different choices, so hot pepper lovers still have a chance to enjoy some unique flavors. Bulich and Madura have a large variety of mushrooms.
Windfall Farm is bringing in apple pumpkin turnovers and pumpkin cupcakes in addition to their excellent mini, small, and large salad mixes and varieties of sprouts, and still have some edible flowers.

Order your holiday birds from Violet Hill, Quattro's, and others
D'Attolico, Berried Treasures, Oak Grove, Paffenroth, Sycamore, Mountain Sweet Berry, and others are here with good-looking winter produce. I was made late by a delivery problem and couldn't take a serious look at each stand, but it looks as if the cold did get to what remained of summer vegetables for the most part. Still, there are beautiful squashes, peppers, cauliflowers, brussels sprouts, all kinds of potatoes, and other tasty vegetables available. I did manage to get some gorgeous chicken parts for my stock, and several farmers had turnips, leeks, carrots, and onions, so it should be good. I didn't see celery, but there ought to be some there.
You can order your turkey or other bird for Thanksgiving today from Violet Hill, Quattro's, and others.

Cheese pumpkins! Cardoons!! Jerusalem Artichokes!! Tiny Potatoes!!
Well, when I'm finding tiny potatoes and jerusalem artichokes exciting, you know that things are wound pretty far down in the Greenmarket. Today I bought some "golden nugget" potatoes and shallots from Mountain Sweet Berry to go under my Thanksgiving capon (which I'm getting from Quattro), a cheese pumpkin from Eckerton for my holiday soup, and the first of Ronnybrook's delicious eggnog (to sample). Other farms with excellent sugar pumpkins and other winter wquashes include Oak Grove, Stokes, Sycamore, and S&SO. Other farms with excellent potatoes include Berried Treasures, Paffenroth, and Stokes. Berried Treasures and Paffenroth have good-looking jerusalem artichokes and Bodhitree and Eckerton have interesting (and tasty) sweet potato and yam varieties.
Paffenroth, Stokes, Bodhitree, S&SO, and Keith have tasty braising greens and S&SO, Keith, Two Guys, Bodhitree, and others have salad greens and other vegetables for salad. Stokes and Paffenroth have cut herbs, beets, radishes, and turnips. Several stands have good-looking varieties of cauliflower and broccoli as well as brussels sprouts on and off the stem. Stokes has fresh lemon grass, string beans, and fennel. Paffenroth has beautiful baby fennel and all sorts of unusual greens.
